Back view of dimensional highlights and lowlights with seamless grow-out by Jenna Lauren

What is it & how does it work?

Dimensional color that grows out seamlessly can be done in a variety of ways. We might do balayage — a hand-painted technique that leaves more of your natural color at the top — or a highlight with a shadow root, which tones the top 1–2" slightly darker so highlights grow out softer. If your hair currently looks solid blonde, we can add lowlights to bring darker color through the ends. Lastly, we can be conscientious about how many highlights we place — leaving enough of your natural color between highlights for a really natural grow-out.

What goes wrong when it's done poorly?

"Natural highlights" can mean many different techniques. If done wrong, you'll quickly end up with roots you don't want and feel the urgency of getting your hair done after only 4 weeks.

Why I specialize in it

I understand firsthand how hard it can be to get my hair done on a regular basis. I want the option to get my hair done every 6 weeks if I want, but also to go 6 months if needed. Many other women feel the same way — they deserve hair that makes them look and feel beautiful every day in between appointments.

Techniques I offer

The Maintenance

Highlights spaced to allow a seamless grow-out. We decide on the lightness and tone (warm, neutral, or cool) for the best results.

The Dimensional

Highlights and lowlights to maintain a heavy highlight without ending up solid blonde — great for blending grays, too.

The Works (Balayage)

Hand-painted balayage tailored to your head, giving the most natural grow-out with placement customized to how much natural you want at your roots.

You're a great candidate if…

  • You want a balayage or a 'lived-in' look that grows out really well.
  • You have grays you want to blend, but don't want a solid color all over.
  • You want highlights that grow out so well, your roots blend in seamlessly.
  • You want highlights that don't give you a 'solid blonde' look.

This might not be the fit if…

  • You want a solid blonde from roots to ends.
  • You want 'unnatural' colors (blue, purple, pink, etc.).
  • You want 'chunky', high-contrast highlights and lowlights.

Frequently asked questions

How long do dimensional, natural highlights last?+

Depending on your overall look, well-done highlights should last between 6–12 weeks.

Will highlights damage my hair?+

If done correctly and with care, highlights should not damage your hair. Be honest about your hair history and use salon-quality products at home.

How long will my service take?+

Highlights can take anywhere between 2–3.5 hours, depending on thickness and length and whether we add lowlights or a base color.

How do I book an appointment?+

Complete the digital consultation form. You'll receive an email with the service to book and a direct link to my booking system.

Do I need to come in with clean hair?+

Yes! Color and lightener work best on clean hair. Too much oil and product can result in uneven coverage, especially on gray hair.

What is the benefit of lowlights?+

Lowlights 'break up' the color on your ends, giving more dimension and a more natural grow-out.

What's a shadow root?+

A shadow root tones your highlights a shade or two darker at the root to soften the line when highlights begin to grow out.
